Do you plot your work in advance or just go for it and write?

My compulsion to plan ahead and in great detail likely stems from a fear of being naturally disorganised and chaotic. It is a coping mechanism I have learnt and includes list writing, keeping paper and electronic calendars and being early to everything.

Planning and organising can take over and take time away from the actual activity I am planning or organising for. Time better spent writing may be used planning to write and organising my notes into paper or electronic folders, for example. This may become a way of procrastinating rather than useful planning.

Perhaps when I have a task or a piece of writing to complete, I should set myself a limited amount of time to plan for it. Maybe I could make an Excel spreadsheet to plan my planning…
